A growing share of shoppers now start with a question to an AI assistant instead of a search bar: “best waterproof hiking boots under $150 for wide feet”. The assistant shortlists a few products, compares them, and sends the shopper to buy. If your store isn’t on that shortlist, you never had a chance to compete.

That’s agentic commerce, and on Shopify it moved from experiment to infrastructure in 2026.

What Changed This Year

Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) with Google — an open standard for AI agents to query catalogues, build carts, and hand off to checkout. Updates this year added multi-item carts, live catalogue queries, and loyalty support.

Agentic Storefronts make Shopify stores available to AI channels — ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode in Search, and the Gemini app — managed from the Shopify Admin.

Checkout is still in flux. Some platforms have pulled back from full in-chat checkout while others expand it. The part that isn’t changing: AI assistants are becoming the discovery layer, and they recommend stores whose product data they can trust.

AI agents don’t browse your beautiful theme. They read structured data. When deciding what to recommend, they rely on:

  • Complete attributes — material, size range, fit, compatibility, dimensions, certifications
  • Specific titles and descriptions — “Men’s Wide-Fit Waterproof Leather Hiking Boot” beats “The Trailblazer”
  • Accurate live inventory and pricing — agents avoid products that may be out of stock
  • Clear policies — shipping times, returns, warranties in plain language
  • Reviews and ratings — social proof matters to agents as much as to people

A store with thin product data is effectively invisible, regardless of how good its products are. This is the e-commerce version of the AI search optimisation problem.

Where Custom Work Helps

For small catalogues, fixing product data by hand is enough. Custom work earns its cost when:

  • Your catalogue is large — AI can enrich and standardise thousands of product descriptions and metafields, with human review
  • Inventory lives outside Shopify — an ERP or warehouse system needs a reliable real-time sync (see the Shopify API integration guide)
  • You sell configurable or B2B products — pricing and compatibility rules need to be exposed in a way agents can use
  • You want to measure it — tracking which orders came from AI channels and which products get recommended

Getting Started This Month

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot about your product category and see who gets recommended.
  2. Ask them about your own products and note what’s wrong or missing.
  3. Fix product data for your top 50 products first — titles, metafields, policies.
  4. Check Agentic Storefront settings in your Shopify Admin.
  5. Re-test monthly. AI recommendations shift as data improves.

For product search on your own store, the AI e-commerce search post covers the other side of the same data.
